Can you think of some instances of recent foodborne illness outbreaks?
International examples:
Japanese city to test school staff for bacteria - "Japanese health officials suspect tainted school lunches caused the outbreak of the 0157 strain of E. coli bacteria that has killed seven people and put hundreds in the hospital. They have yet to pinpoint specific food.
So far, 8,272 people, almost all schoolchildren, have fallen ill from the highly contagious bacteria--- 6,490 of them in Sakai, a city of 800,000 people about 300 miles west of Tokyo". 7
National examples - Nevada:
Norwalk virus was named after a school district in Norwalk, Ohio.
Sick workers linked to Reno Hilton virus: "The oubreak of a gastrointestinal virus that infected 1,007 guests and employees of the Reno Hilton most likely can be traced to ill employees who continued to work, health officials say." 8
Infestation threatens restaurant: "Carson City health officials threatened to shut
down a popular restaurant earlier this month after a mouse infestation went virtually
unchecked for several months". 9
