The Federal government enacted the Occupational
Safety and Health Act of 1970 to address
- 14,000 worker deaths per year
- 2.5 million disabled workers per year
- 300,000 new cases of occupational diseases yearly
In the last 28 years, OSHA has impacted the American
workplace by helping to
- decrease worker deaths
- decrease worker injuries
- identify emerging occupational health issues
- ensure emerging occupational health issues receive attention
- provide greater control over workers' compensation costs
There are two methods of OSHA oversight. The first is actual Federal oversight. The
second is enactment of a state version of OSHA.
