Bacterial Growth

Graphic representation of growth stages...

Lag Phase The time period where bacteria are gathering resources (food, water, etc) and waiting for conditions favorable to reproduction.

Log Phase The time period where temperature and metabolic needs have been met and bacteria are actively reproducing. Growth numbers are exponential.

Stationary Phase Growth is stationary. The numbers of bacterial reproducing approximates those dying. One or more metabolic needs for growth may be depleted.

Decline Phase Unfavorable growth conditions exist. The numbers of bacteria dying exceed those reproducing.
